The phrase became a widely shared internet joke for questioning a dog caught in an odd or unexpected moment, spreading mainly through short-form video and reaction clips where the line is spoken directly to the animal. Its humour comes from the informal spelling and the deadpan curiosity behind it, which makes it easy to reuse over almost any pet footage. Because dogs constantly provide new strange behaviour, creators keep returning to it as a quick, instantly understood reaction.

The viral what da dog doin voice clip, used in TikTok and meme videos to react when a pet is caught doing something strange, silly, or unexpected.
This short clip captures a man playfully asking, in a drawn-out, curious tone, what a dog is doing, with the slang phrasing that made the line instantly recognisable online. The voice is casual and slightly bewildered, rising at the end as if genuinely puzzled by the animal in front of him, and the brief length makes it land as a quick punchline rather than a full conversation. Heard over a video, it instantly frames the pet as the star of a strange or funny moment, inviting viewers to laugh at the dog's behaviour while feeling like they are in on the joke.
