Windows 2000 was released by Microsoft in 2000 as part of the Windows NT family, aimed largely at business and professional users rather than home gamers. Its startup chime became one of the most recognisable boot sounds of that period, heard daily in offices and schools. As those machines disappeared, the sound survived online through nostalgia videos, retro computing channels and meme edits about old technology. It is now used less as a literal system sound and more as shorthand for turning on something dated, slow or unexpectedly reliable.
