The clip comes from Game Grumps Part 20 of their Sonic the Hedgehog 2006 series, a famously broken 2006 platformer that became a staple of the channel's early let's play era. Arin Hanson, co-host alongside Dan Avidan, built a following for loud, improvised reactions to bad game design, and this outburst was clipped and shared across forums and video edits. It endures because Sonic 06 remains a reference point for glitchy games, and the line works outside its context for any absurd discovery.

Arin Hanson from Game Grumps shouting what is this during a Sonic 06 playthrough, used as a confused reaction sound for bizarre game moments and memes.
This is an eight second clip of Arin Hanson reacting in disbelief during a Game Grumps let's play of Sonic the Hedgehog 2006. His voice rises quickly from confusion into a loud, drawn out shout of what is this, capturing the exact moment a glitchy scene stops making sense. The delivery is raw, unscripted and genuinely baffled rather than performed, which makes it land as an instant shorthand for shock. Listeners hear the frustration of watching something broken unfold in real time, and the line sticks because the panic feels completely relatable.
