Gangnam Style was released in 2012 by South Korean artist PSY and became a global viral hit after its music video spread on YouTube, eventually reaching a billion views. The song satirised Seoul's Gangnam district while its horse riding dance and catchy electronic hook made it easy to parody. Loud, clipped edits later circulated on soundboards and in meme videos, where the exaggerated volume itself became part of the joke, signalling an intentionally over the top celebration.
