Bad Boys was written and performed by Jamaican reggae group Inner Circle and first released in the late 1980s. It became famous in the United States as the opening theme for the reality television series COPS, which began in 1989 and opened almost every episode with the chorus. A 1993 re-release turned it into an international chart hit. Online, that long television association made the chorus shorthand for sirens and arrests, so editors now reuse it for comedy chases, memes and social videos where the punishment clearly outweighs the crime.
