Gru is the central character of Illumination's Despicable Me franchise, which began in 2010 with Steve Carell voicing the reformed supervillain. His accent, expressions and interactions with the Minions made him a constant source of memes across short-video apps and messaging chats. Short voice clips like this one circulate widely in Spanish-speaking meme communities, where the label sonido gru meme is commonly used. Editors keep reusing him because the character is instantly recognizable even in a clip under two seconds.
