The clip comes from Final Fantasy X, released by Square in 2001 for PlayStation 2, in an early scene where Tidus tries to cheer up Yuna by laughing on purpose. Actors James Arnold Taylor and Hedy Burress performed the awkward exchange, which was meant to sound forced in-story. Clips of the moment spread on forums and YouTube in the 2000s, then became a staple reaction sound on soundboards and in edited videos. Its enduring appeal is how instantly it communicates insincere amusement without any explanation.

The iconic forced laugh from Tidus in Final Fantasy X, used in memes and reaction videos to signal awkward, cringe, or fake laughter moments.
This is the famous scene from Final Fantasy X where Tidus forces an exaggerated, stilted laugh on the boat deck to lift Yuna's spirits. The audio starts with a loud, unnatural 'ha' repeated in a stiff rhythm before breaking into a more natural chuckle. Because the delivery is intentionally awkward and over-performed, listeners instantly recognize it as fake laughter. That deliberate discomfort makes it funny out of context and perfect as a punchline for embarrassing silences, bad jokes, or moments where someone is clearly pretending to find something amusing.
