The ba-dum-tss is the signature sting of comedy drummers, a tradition stretching back to vaudeville and burlesque stage bands whose percussionists punctuated every punchline live. It moved into radio, late-night talk shows and sitcoms, and from there into internet meme culture, where a 1-second clip does the same job under text posts and edits. It sits in a whole family of joke punctuation, alongside the cartoon slip whistle, the game-show wrong-answer buzz and Nelson's mocking ha-ha.

The classic ba-dum-tss drum sting: a quick tom thump and cymbal crash after a punchline. Creators drop it under bad jokes, puns and fails in memes.
This is the famous ba-dum-tss, the comedy drummer's rimshot sting: two low tom thumps answered by a bright splash of cymbal, all landing in just over a second. It sounds like the punchline button of a late-night talk show band, cheeky, theatrical and instantly recognisable. The effect is pure punctuation — it tells the viewer a joke just landed, whether the joke was brilliant or gloriously terrible, and it turns an awkward silence into a shared wink with the audience.
