The phrase comes from Bobby Shmurda's 2014 breakout single Hot Nigga, where the opening lyric quickly became a standalone catchphrase online. Short clips of the line spread through Vine and later short video platforms, often paired with dances, freeze frames and sudden throwback edits. Its brevity kept it useful long after the original chart run, because creators could drop it into almost any timeline joke without explaining the reference. It remains a familiar shorthand for rewinding a story by a few days.

The About a Week Ago sound from Bobby Shmurda's Hot Nigga, a short rap clip creators use for throwback reveals, time skips and funny flashbacks.
About a Week Ago is a short excerpt built around Bobby Shmurda delivering the line over a bouncy hip hop beat. The vocal lands with a confident, rhythmic snap, and the phrasing immediately signals a jump back in time. That quick setup is why the clip hits so fast in edits, turning an ordinary before and after moment into a punchline. Viewers recognise the cue before anything else happens, so the reveal, mistake or transformation that follows feels funnier and more dramatic than it would on its own alone today.
