The ba dum tss rimshot comes from live comedy drumming, where a drummer would punctuate a joke with a quick snare roll and a cymbal crash. The pattern became shorthand for a punchline on stage, in television comedy and in late-night routines, so audiences learned to recognise it instantly. Online, it spread through reaction videos, meme edits and soundboards, where creators drop it after puns, dad jokes and bad one-liners. It remains popular because it needs no explanation and turns even a weak joke into a shared gag, much like the dramatic dun dun dun sting used for a reveal.

The classic ba dum tss drum sting that follows a joke, with a snare hit and cymbal crash to land the punchline. It is used after puns and dad jokes in videos.
Ba dum tss is the short drum sting comedians use to punctuate a joke, and this clip captures that familiar rimshot in just a few seconds. It opens with a quick snare pattern that builds a tiny moment of anticipation, then ends with a bright cymbal crash that feels like a musical wink. The sound is crisp, punchy and instantly recognisable, even without any words or setup. Hearing it tells a viewer the joke has landed, or that it was deliberately cheesy, which is often the joke itself. It works because the timing is so well known that the audience anticipates the crash before it arrives.
