Chibi Maruko-chan began as Momoko Sakura's manga in 1986 and became a long running television anime in 1990, centred on young Maruko and her family in Shizuoka. Tomozo Sakura, her doting grandfather, is known for sentimental haiku and gentle comic scenes. Short clips of his dialogue circulate online as soramimi, the Japanese practice of deliberately mishearing lines as funnier phrases. This example spread through soundboards and short video edits because the mishearing is easy to quote, instantly recognisable to fans, and short enough to reuse as a reaction.
