Discord launched in 2015 as a voice and text platform for gaming communities and later grew into a general home for servers, group chats and direct messages. Its default notification sounds became instantly recognisable as millions of users heard them daily while gaming, studying and working. The new message ping spread beyond the app into YouTube edits, Twitch streams and short memes, where creators use it as shorthand for an online reply, a callout in a server, or someone suddenly coming back online after being silent.
