Portal is a 2007 puzzle game from Valve in which players move through test chambers run by the Aperture Science computer system. Radios are small, portable objects hidden around those chambers, and their tinny, broadcast-like audio has become a recognisable part of the game's atmosphere for longtime players. A compressed version of that radio sound later circulated on soundboards, where its lower quality made it even more muffled and lo-fi. It remains popular because it instantly evokes Portal's eerie, isolated tone without needing any dialogue.
