Young sloths are quiet, slow-moving animals, so the idea of one screaming feels absurd, and that contrast is what made this recording travel. A short clip of a baby sloth letting out a startlingly loud, high-pitched cry circulated on video platforms, where the gap between the sleepy animal and the shriek turned it into reaction fodder. Since then it has lived on meme soundboards and short-form edits, usually played over moments of over-the-top shock. The appeal is simple: nobody expects a sloth to sound like that.

A real baby sloth letting out a loud, high-pitched scream. This short animal sound is a favourite in reaction memes, surprise cuts and funny TikTok edits.
This three-second clip captures a baby sloth mid-shriek, and the shock is the whole joke. Instead of the drowsy coo you expect from the slowest animal alive, you get a piercing, wobbly scream that sounds almost human. It starts sharp and high, wavers like a tiny siren, then cuts off abruptly. At just over three seconds it lands before anyone can get used to it. Played cold, it yanks a laugh out of viewers who braced for something cute, which is exactly why editors drop it onto jump cuts and surprise reveals.
