Microsoft released Windows 95 in August 1995, and its startup sound was composed by musician Brian Eno, who was asked to create a short welcoming piece for the new operating system. The result became one of the most recognisable sounds in computing history, heard by millions of people as home computers spread through the 1990s. Today it survives mainly through nostalgia and internet humour, where short clips are reused to evoke the era, parody outdated technology and signal a throwback to early personal computing.
