Phonk grew out of underground hip-hop and drifted into TikTok and YouTube meme editing in the early 2020s, where its dark, aggressive beats became shorthand for dramatic or ironic moments. Editors began pairing that sound with unrelated crying clips to heighten a fail, a rejection, or a sad twist, and the baby crying version spread as a reusable reaction sound in short-form videos. Like the baby laughing meme, it works because the baby sound is instantly recognisable, so creators can drop it into almost any disappointing or exaggerated scene without explanation.
