California Dreamin' was written by John Phillips and Michelle Phillips and first became a hit for The Mamas and the Papas after its release as a single in 1965. Inspired by a cold New York winter and a longing for Los Angeles warmth, it became one of the defining songs of the 1960s folk rock and California sound. Its harmonies and flute solo have kept it in films, adverts and travel media for decades, and short clips and ringtones still reuse the chorus as shorthand for escaping winter and chasing sunshine.
