The sound comes from Minecraft, developed by Mojang, where the Zombie Pigman was a neutral mob found in the Nether. Introduced in the 2010 Halloween Update, the creature was replaced by the Zombified Piglin in the 2020 Nether Update, but its oinking death noise remained familiar to long-time players. Clips of the sound spread through YouTube gameplay videos, soundboards and meme edits, where it became shorthand for a sudden, anticlimactic death. It is still used because Minecraft players instantly recognise it, even outside the game.

The Minecraft zombie pig death sound effect, the short grunt and oink when a Zombie Pigman dies in the Nether, used for gaming fails and meme edits.
This is the death sound of the Zombie Pigman from Minecraft, a short, squealy grunt that cuts off as the mob collapses. It lasts under two seconds and mixes a pig-like oink with a guttural zombie groan, instantly recognisable to anyone who has fought in the Nether. Played on its own it feels abrupt and a little comic, because such a threatening half-zombie creature goes out with a squeak. Creators use that contrast to puncture a dramatic moment, turning a character death, a fail or a defeat in a video into a quick joke.
