Windows 95, released by Microsoft in 1995, included a small set of short system sounds for alerts and notifications, and Tada became one of the most recognisable. Its bright, rising notes were heard on millions of home and office computers during the mid-nineties, when Windows 95 helped bring personal computing into the mainstream. As those machines were replaced, the sound lived on in soundboards, online videos and meme edits, where it now works as shorthand for retro technology, nostalgia and a job well done.
