Beep Blocks first appeared in Super Mario 3D World, released by Nintendo in 2013 for Wii U, where coloured blocks alternate in time with an audible beep. Beep Block Skyway built a whole level around crossing those timed platforms high above the clouds. The mechanic returned in later Mario games and in Super Mario Maker courses, which helped the beeping rhythm spread through gameplay videos, streams and edits online. Because the sound alone signals an imminent switch, creators still use it as shorthand for precise timing, disappearing floors and beat based platforming challenges.
