The effect was created by sound designer Jimmy MacDonald for the Donald Duck cartoon Donald's Tire Trouble, released on January 29, 1943. MacDonald built many of Disney's early effects from everyday objects, bells, drums and horns performed live to picture. This tiny combination of clanks, a honk and a smack later entered stock libraries like Hollywood Edge, where editors could reuse it far beyond the original short. It survives today in memes and edits because its old-school slapstick timing is instantly readable.
