Dembow grew out of Jamaican dancehall in the Dominican Republic, where producers turned its driving riddim into a faster, harder local sound. El Alfa, one of the genre's most recognisable voices, helped carry dembow from Santo Domingo clubs to international charts and collaborations through the 2010s. Short dembow clips later spread widely on TikTok, Instagram Reels and YouTube Shorts, where creators use them for dance challenges and high-energy edits. The sound remains popular because its relentless rhythm is instantly recognisable and works in just a few seconds.
