The clip comes from Homer Simpson, the lead character of The Simpsons, saying the French exclamation oh punaise, a mild expression of surprise or annoyance used in the French-dubbed version of the show. Shared as a short reaction sound on soundboards and in meme edits, it spread because the delivery is instantly recognisable even without understanding French. Creators keep using it as a quick, cartoonish stand-in for disbelief, making it a handy reaction for fails, surprises and awkward moments in short-form video.

Homer Simpson exclaims oh punaise in this short French-dubbed clip, a surprised reaction sound used in memes and edits when something unexpected happens.
Homer Simpson lets out a drawn-out oh punaise, the French equivalent of a startled oh wow, in a voice that rises with comic disbelief before dropping into weary resignation. The delivery is unmistakably Homer: loud, a little nasal, and instantly recognisable even to listeners who do not speak French, because the emotion carries the joke. It lands as a reaction to an unexpected mishap, a bad idea backfiring, or a plan falling apart at the last second. Played over a clip, it turns a small failure into a cartoonish punchline and signals to the viewer that something has gone hilariously wrong.
