Pac-Man was released as an arcade game in Japan in 1980 and quickly became one of the most recognisable video games in the world. Its death sound comes from that original arcade version, played when a ghost touches Pac-Man and ends his run. As retro gaming grew online, the short clip was lifted from gameplay footage and shared as a reaction sound for fails and game overs. Its brevity and instant recognition have kept it in regular use in edits, streams and short videos decades after the arcade era ended.
