In Japan the censor tone is commonly called a pi sound, after the short high beep viewers hear on television variety shows, news segments, and later online videos. Broadcasters used it to conceal profanity, personal information, and brand names that could not be aired. As Japanese clips circulated on video platforms and in anime fan edits, the tone became a familiar meme tool outside Japan as well. Editors now borrow it as a universal shorthand for something forbidden, even when nothing was actually censored in the original recording at all today.
