Jornal Nacional is TV Globo's flagship nightly newscast, broadcasting in Brazil since 1969 and known for its dramatic presentation. The short percussive theme accents became widely recognized by Brazilian audiences from years of nightly exposure. Online, the 'tan-taaan' onomatopoeia turned into shorthand for the program's serious tone, and creators began ripping the sting for memes, WhatsApp jokes and TikTok skits that parody news broadcasts. It endures because almost any Brazilian viewer instantly reads it as 'important announcement incoming', making it a perfect setup for comedy.

The dramatic 'tan-taaan' sting from Brazil's Jornal Nacional newscast. Creators use it for fake breaking news and serious announcements in memes.
This is the short, dramatic 'tan-taaan' hit associated with Jornal Nacional, Brazil's flagship nightly news program. It lasts just over a second: a deep, percussive struck note followed by a longer, swelling tone that hangs in the air with a sense of gravity. The timbre is orchestral and urgent, like a broadcast transition meant to signal that something important is about to be announced. When dropped into a meme or edit, it instantly creates a mock-serious atmosphere, making an ordinary or absurd statement feel like breaking news and priming viewers to pay attention before the punchline lands.
