Leapster was a cartridge based educational handheld from LeapFrog, launched in 2003 for young children learning reading and maths. Players later discovered that tilting or partly removing a cartridge while it was running could corrupt the game, producing distorted graphics and garbled sound. Clips of those glitches spread online through retro gaming and meme communities, where this particular corruption noise became shorthand for a broken childhood game. It remains popular because it mixes genuine nostalgia with the universal humour of technology failing at the worst moment.
