Netflix introduced the ta-dum as the audio signature for its original films and series in 2015, playing it at the start of titles on the streaming service. The short sting soon escaped the platform as viewers copied it into memes, parodies and fake trailers, using it to give ordinary moments a grand, cinematic opening. A longer theatrical version followed later, but the brief original remains the most recognisable. Its continued use comes from instant familiarity: two notes are enough to tell an audience that a show, joke or reveal is about to begin.
