The Nokia Tune is based on a passage from Gran Vals, a solo guitar piece written by Spanish composer Francisco Tarrega in 1902. Nokia adapted the melody in the 1990s as its default ringtone, and it shipped on millions of handsets including basic models like the Nokia 1650. At its peak the tune was heard around the world every day as phones rang in public. It later became a shared cultural shorthand for early mobile era, reused in videos, remixes and jokes about indestructible phones and long battery life.
