Skype launched in 2003 as a voice and video calling app and became one of the most recognisable communication tools of the 2000s, with its distinctive notification sounds built into everyday calls and chats. The logout chime played whenever a user signed out, and as Skype faded in favour of newer apps, the sound survived on soundboards and in memes as a nostalgic shorthand for leaving. After Microsoft retired Skype in 2025, clips like this became even more associated with the end of an internet era.
