Rail grinding became a signature move in the Sonic the Hedgehog games after its introduction in Sonic Adventure 2 in 2001, where Sonic and Shadow slid along rails between sections of levels. Short contact and grind sounds from that style of gameplay have since been reused far beyond the games themselves. On video platforms the brief scrape is used as a generic speed and sliding cue, detached from any specific level, and it remains popular with gaming editors because it is instantly readable, very short and easy to sync to movement.
