The line comes from Dexter, where Sergeant James Doakes shouts 'Surprise, motherfucker!' at Dexter Morgan during the show's second season. The over-the-top delivery turned it into an instant classic, and around the early 2010s it exploded across YouTube edits and reaction videos as the ultimate jump-scare punchline. The phrase also became a Dexter meme in its own right, spawning reaction GIFs and quote posts. Two decades later it still lands because nothing sells an ambush quite like Doakes's theatrical rage.

The 'Surprise, motherfucker!' shout from Sergeant Doakes in Dexter. A classic jump-scare reaction sound for plot twists and unexpected reveals in memes.
This is the five-second shout of 'Surprise, motherfucker!' barked by Sergeant James Doakes in Dexter. The delivery is loud, aggressive and deliberately over-the-top: a sharp intake of breath, then the two words punched out with maximum menace. Hearing it feels like getting caught red-handed by someone who has been waiting for this exact moment. Viewers react with an involuntary flinch and then a laugh, which is why the clip works as a jump-scare punchline. It turns any calm setup into an ambush, because the tone of voice promises trouble in the most theatrical way possible.
