AOL Instant Messenger, usually shortened to AIM, launched in 1997 and became a defining chat service of the early internet, especially in the United States. Its system sounds, including the incoming message alert, were heard daily by millions of users at home, school and work. AIM was discontinued in December 2017, but its alerts survived through recordings shared on soundboards, in retro edits and in videos recreating old desktop experiences. The chime remains popular because it instantly signals a new message while also marking a specific era of online conversation.
