About this sound

Short AR2 fire sound effect from Half-Life 2, a sharp single pulse rifle shot used in game edits, FPS montages and sci-fi weapon scenes and soundboards.

This is a single shot from the AR2, the Combine pulse rifle from Half-Life 2, cut down to a fraction of a second. It is a tight, metallic burst with a synthetic crack and a fast decay, more sci-fi zap than real gunpowder gunshot. Because it is so short and punchy, it lands as instant feedback rather than a full battle sound. Placed over gameplay or animation, it makes a weapon feel powerful and futuristic, and repeated in quick succession it recreates the rifle's familiar automatic fire rhythm.

Pro tip

Layer two or three copies a few frames apart to mimic full-auto AR2 fire, keep the volume under dialogue, and add a tiny room reverb for indoor scenes. Do not stretch this 104ms clip, it turns thin and loses its crack.

How people use it

Add futuristic gunfire to Half-Life gameplay edits.
Trigger the shot in FPS stream sound alerts.
Use as a laser weapon in animated shorts.
Spam rapidly for meme automatic fire jokes.

More information

The AR2, officially the Overwatch Standard Issue Pulse Rifle, is the main Combine assault rifle in Valve's Half-Life 2 from 2004, recognizable for its dark energy ammunition and distinctive secondary fire. Clips of its single shot have circulated on gaming soundboards alongside other FPS staples like the Fortnite pump shotgun sound, because the sound is instantly identifiable to players even without visuals. Its brevity makes it ideal for buttons and alerts, so it remains popular for streams, mods, machinima, and fan remakes long after the original release.
