It's Just a Burning Memory opens Stage 1 of The Caretaker's Everywhere at the End of Time, released in 2016 as the first part of Leyland Kirby's six-album exploration of memory loss and dementia. The track takes a vintage ballroom recording and degrades it with crackle and looping, giving it the sound of a memory fading at its edges. It later became closely linked online with the Backrooms and liminal space aesthetic, where creators paired its nostalgic, decaying melody with images of empty malls, offices and hallways, and it remains a shorthand for eerie, half-remembered places.
