Bad to the Bone was released in 1982 by George Thorogood and the Destroyers and became one of the most recognisable blues-rock songs of the decade, largely because of its opening guitar riff. Over the following years the riff was used in films, television and advertising whenever a tough or confident character needed an instant entrance, which cemented its association with swagger. As short-form video grew, creators trimmed the opening to just a few seconds, turning it into a reusable meme cue for dramatic entrances, reveals and deadpan reactions.
