About this sound

Cirno's Perfect Freeze spell card call from the Touhou games, with her shrill voice over a freezing blast. Used for ice jokes, freeze frames and anime edits.

This is Cirno, the self-proclaimed strongest ice fairy of the Touhou Project, calling out her signature spell card, Perfect Freeze. Her high, bratty voice snaps out the attack name before a bright, crackling burst of ice magic swells underneath, all chimes and shattering frost packed into about eight seconds. It lands like a cartoon cold snap: playful, smug and just menacing enough to sell the joke. Hearing it, a viewer instantly pictures someone getting flash-frozen mid-sentence, which is why the clip works as a punchline button whenever a character says something clueless or the temperature of a scene drops to zero.

Pro tip

Drop the voice line right on the frame your subject gets frozen, then cut the music for half a beat so the ice crackle lands clean. Pair it with a flash or frost overlay, and never stretch it past the freeze or the joke melts.

How people use it

More information

Cirno is the ice fairy from ZUN's Touhou Project, the long-running series of bullet hell shooters from Team Shanghai Alice, debuting as the stage two boss of Embodiment of Scarlet Devil in 2002. ZUN famously marked her as ⑨, slang for idiot, in a game manual, which turned her into a beloved baka mascot across fan art, remixes and memes.
