The carvings come from Dark Souls, released in 2011, where they were a simple way to communicate in multiplayer without voice chat. Dropping or using a carved wooden head would play a short spoken phrase, including Hello, Thank You and Very Good, so invaders, hosts and summoned phantoms could react to each other. As Dark Souls clips spread on forums and video sites, the Very Good line escaped the game and became a shorthand compliment, used ironically and sincerely whenever something deserved quiet approval.
