The clip comes from a ViralHog video shared as a YouTube Short, built around the hyrax and its famously loud scream. Hyraxes are small mammals related to elephants, but online they are known for surprisingly powerful, shrill calls that have made them a recurring animal meme. Short-form editors picked up shrill animal cries for jumpscare edits because the sound is instantly readable without context. This version spread as a reusable soundboard clip for reactions and pranks, where the appeal is the mismatch between the tiny animal and the horror-movie intensity of its shriek.
About this sound
A hyrax screams in a jumpscare clip from a ViralHog video. People use the shrill shriek for surprise reveals, horror edits and funny animal pranks online.
This sound is a small hyrax letting out a piercing, high-pitched scream that feels much bigger than the animal itself. The clip builds with the cute, furry mammal in frame before the shriek hits suddenly, turning an ordinary animal moment into a mini jumpscare. That contrast is the joke: the innocent look makes the loud, almost human-like cry funnier and more startling. Viewers hear tension break in an instant, which is why the scream lands so well over faces, reveals and unexpected cuts where something harmless suddenly feels dramatic.
