The line comes from The View, a track on Lulu, the 2011 collaborative album by Metallica and Lou Reed based on Frank Wedekind's Lulu plays. Reed delivers most of the vocals as spoken word while the band plays behind him, and near the end Hetfield repeatedly shouts I am the table. The album divided fans on release, and that single phrase was singled out for parody, remixes and image macros. It has since lived on as shorthand for the record and for earnest lines that sound unintentionally funny.
About this sound
James Hetfield shouting I am the table from Metallica and Lou Reed's The View off Lulu. Used as a meme reaction for absurd confidence and table jokes.
This clip is James Hetfield bellowing the line I am the table over a heavy, grinding riff from The View, the Metallica and Lou Reed collaboration. Delivered completely straight, the repeated shout turns a piece of furniture into a defiant identity statement, which is why it sounds both intense and ridiculous at the same time. The vocal is raw, strained and oddly earnest, riding the song's bleak spoken word verses. Played out of context it lands as instant comedy, a dead serious metal frontman claiming to be household furniture with total conviction.
