Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky composed his Piano Concerto No. 1 in B flat minor in 1874 and 1875, and it was premiered in Boston in 1875 with Hans von Bülow as soloist. Despite early criticism from pianist Nikolai Rubinstein, for whom it was first intended, the work became one of the most performed and recorded concertos in the repertoire. Its bold opening, originally written to grab attention immediately, is now widely used online as a shorthand for grandeur, triumph and exaggerated importance in short videos and edits.
