The M16 is one of the most recognisable military rifles in the world, in service with armed forces since the 1960s and familiar from countless films, news footage and video games. Its sharp, distinctive report has become shorthand for modern infantry combat in popular culture. Online, short clips of that firing sound circulate widely as reusable effects for editors who need a realistic rifle shot without recording one themselves. Because the sound is instantly recognisable and easy to drop into a timeline, it remains a staple for action edits, gaming content and memes.
About this sound
A sharp, realistic M16 rifle gunshot sound effect, capturing the crack of automatic fire in just over two seconds for use in action videos, games and memes.
This is a short, punchy recording of an M16 rifle firing, lasting just over two seconds. It opens with a loud, sharp crack as the round leaves the barrel, followed by the mechanical clatter of the action cycling and a brief echo that fades quickly. The sound is clean and direct, with no background music or voices to distract from the shot itself. It instantly signals military action and danger, making a scene feel more intense, urgent and realistic. Listeners recognise the distinctive snap of the rifle straight away, which is why editors reach for it when they want a single gunshot to land with real weight.
