Mahna Mahna was written by Italian composer Piero Umiliani as Viva la Sauna Svedese for the 1968 film Sweden: Heaven and Hell. Jim Henson brought it to American television in 1969, when the shaggy orange Muppet Mahna Mahna performed it with the two pink Snowths on The Ed Sullivan Show. The routine became a signature sketch on The Muppet Show in the 1970s, and the tune has since lived on as a comedy interlude and internet meme, instantly signalling silliness wherever it plays.
About this sound
The classic Mahna Mahna scat song from The Muppets and its doo-doo-be-do-do refrain. A playful clip for silly montages and lighthearted comedy video moments.
Mahna Mahna is the bouncy nonsense-scat song made famous by The Muppets, built around a call-and-response of the gibberish phrase followed by a cheerful doo-doo-be-do-do backing chorus. It sounds like a carefree 1960s variety-show number, with a shaggy long-haired singer trading lines with two pink backup singers. The clip instantly sets a goofy, lighthearted mood, and hearing it makes most viewers smile because the tune is impossible not to hum along with, turning even ordinary footage into something playful and silly.
