Metalocalypse is an Adult Swim animated series that premiered in 2006 and follows the fictional death metal band Dethklok, whose members are constantly surrounded by chaos, violence and media attention. Like many television comedies, the show used a sharp electronic censor tone to cover strong language, and that short sound became easy to lift and reuse online. As Metalocalypse clips circulated on soundboards and in fan edits, the bleep took on a second life as a shorthand for a joke that is too rude to say out loud, which keeps it useful long after the original broadcasts.
About this sound
A short censor bleep from Metalocalypse, the Adult Swim animated metal series, used by creators to mute swearing and add a comic punch to edits and memes.
This is the brief, high-pitched electronic bleep used to cover profanity in Metalocalypse, lasting less than a second but instantly recognisable to fans of the show. It has a clean, flat tone with a sudden start and stop, like a television censor cutting in mid-word, leaving the rest of the sentence implied rather than heard. In edits it works as a punchline in itself, signalling that something rude, absurd or outrageous has just been said without actually saying it. The abrupt silence and familiar tone make viewers fill in the missing word themselves, which usually makes the joke land harder than the original line would have.
