The scream was first recorded for the 1951 film Distant Drums, where it accompanied a soldier named Wilhelm being dragged underwater, and it was later named after that character. Sound designer Ben Burtt rediscovered the stock recording and reused it in Star Wars and other films, turning it into a deliberate in-joke for sound departments. From there it spread through action films, video games and online edits, where creators now drop it as a familiar shorthand for a sudden fall or comic disaster.
