"Notice me senpai" grew out of anime and manga fandom slang online, where senpai is a Japanese honorific for an admired upperclassman or senior. The phrase became a broad internet meme in the early 2010s and spread through image macros, parody songs, cosplay clips and short reaction edits. It stuck because the meaning is instantly clear even outside anime spaces: wanting attention very badly. Today the sound is still used as shorthand for one-sided admiration, awkward flirting and overenthusiastic fan behavior.
