Super Sonic first appeared as Sonic the Hedgehog's powered-up form in the Sonic games, and he brought that transformation to Super Smash Bros. Brawl, released for the Wii in 2008. In Brawl, collecting a Smash Ball lets Sonic become Super Sonic, his Final Smash, with a bright flash, a burst of speed and this scream. The clip spread through gameplay videos, Smash montages and meme edits, where the sound quickly became shorthand for a sudden power-up. It is still used because the voice is instantly recognisable to Nintendo and Sonic fans.
