Phonk grew out of 1990s Memphis rap samples, chopped vocals and lo-fi drums, then found a second life as drift phonk in the early 2020s. Short, bass-heavy loops spread quickly on TikTok because they fit car culture, street racing clips and short-form edits perfectly. Producers leaned into cowbell leads and saturated 808s that could be recognised in the first second, even on phone speakers. This style became a default soundtrack for confident, aggressive edits, and brief phonk stingers remain popular for transitions, memes and montage intros.
