Trogdor first appeared on the Homestar Runner website, where Strong Bad drew the one-armed dragon in response to a fan email asking him to draw a dragon. The accompanying song, with its deliberately ridiculous metal lyrics about burninating peasants and villages, became a cult favourite among early internet fans and later reached a wider audience through games and video sharing. It endures because the joke is instantly readable: a tiny, absurd dragon treated like a world-ending threat.
About this sound
The Trogdor the Burninator clip from Homestar Runner, a heavy metal tribute to a village-burning dragon, used in memes to hype up epic or destructive moments.
This clip plays the instantly recognisable Trogdor theme, a tongue-in-cheek heavy metal anthem about a one-armed dragon with beefy arms who burninates peasants, villages and thatched-roof cottages. Crunchy guitars, driving drums and a shouted, heroic vocal delivery give it the feel of a deliberately overblown fantasy battle cry, even though the whole thing is played for laughs. Dropped into a video, it instantly raises the stakes, turning an ordinary fail, prank or gaming moment into a mock-epic disaster, with the listener half-expecting fire and chaos to follow.
