This clip belongs to the wave of short British slang reaction sounds that circulate on soundboards and in TikTok edits, where a single voiced line becomes shorthand for a whole attitude. The elongated 'mateeeee' is the part people quote in comments, which is how clips like this travel even without a known original video. Nobody has pinned down a single source, so it lives entirely as an internet reaction: a quick, friendly way to flag someone doing something baffling. Its staying power comes from being endlessly droppable, short, and instantly readable.
About this sound
A short British voice clip asking 'what are you doing, mate' in a laid-back tone. Used as a reaction sound for calling out friends' questionable decisions online.
This short voice clip captures a man with a British accent asking 'what are you doing, mate', stretching the final word into a long, amused 'mateeee'. The delivery is casual and slightly teasing rather than angry, like a friend catching someone mid-shenanigan and calling it out on the spot. The exaggerated drawl on the last word gives it a comic punch that lands well over a frozen frame or a slow zoom. Hearing it makes viewers brace for a questionable decision about to play out, which is exactly why creators drop it right before the chaos begins.
